Preimplantation Genetic Testing is a crucial treatment option for your or your partner to consider while undergoing IVF at PFCLA, providing you with the opportunity of identifying the sex of the embryo. Your dedicated doctor will discuss this option with you in further detail and address any concerns or worries you may have during your consultation.
Benefits of Baby Gender Selection
If you or your partner are considering selecting your future baby’s sex and want to know if this is right for you, here are some of the common medical and elective reasons we’ve experienced at PFCLA:
- You or your partner are experiencing a form of genetically transmitted diseases that are sex-based and would like to mitigate the risk of your boy or girl receiving it.
- You and or your partner have had the unfortunate experience of losing a child and wish to have another of the same sex.
- You and or your partner are more equipped to parent one sex or the other.
Available Gender Selection Techniques
Innovation in reproductive technologies can identify the sex of your or your partner's embryo in its initial stage. You or your partner can consider IVF with preimplantation genetic screening (PGS/PGT-A) if there are no disorders known and you'd like to test for genetic diseases and chromosomal abnormalities of each embryo before implantation. PGS/PGT-A is different from Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which tests for a pre-specified genetic disease. You or your partner can consider in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) if there is already a high probability of a known disorder being passed down to your future baby.
Preimplantation genetic testing is a much more reliable approach to gender selection than other techniques marketed by some fertility clinics. For example, we do not recommend sperm spinning.
What to Expect During IVF and Preimplantation Genetic Testing
PGD or PGS takes place after the second stage of IVF, and your dedicated doctor will explain everything you need to know about these two forms of preimplantation genetic testing. Here’s what you or your partner can expect throughout the gender selection procedure at PFCLA:
- Your embryologists fertilize eggs (harvested from you or your donor) with sperm (taken from your partner or donor) in the laboratory.
- Your fertilized embryo is cultured for five to six days until it reaches the blastocyst stage (an embryo made up of around 100 cells).
- Your embryologist then removes a small number of cells to test the pre-placenta area using a laser and a microscopic glass needle.
- Once testing is complete, the healthy embryo of your desired sex can be transferred into your uterus or your chosen surrogate.
However, it’s important to note that you or your partner may not be able to produce healthy embryos of your desired sex. This can be caused by your or your partner's age, egg supply, or sperm quality. In these cases, your doctor can recommend sperm or egg donation as another possible avenue to pursue.
